Minor quakes continue to pepper Southern California - A 3.5-magnitude quake jolted parts of the Southern California area on Thursday morning. The quake was located in Orange County area just 2 miles north of the Newport Coast zones. The quake is part of a series of smaller quakes to strike the area over the last 24 hours. This comes just a day after a magnitude-4 quake hit the Inland Empire on Wednesday morning. "I don't want to alarm people, but we have not had a sizable quake in Southern California for many, many months... I have a friend here from another state who never felt an earthquake and wonders why we are called earthquake country." (map)

TROPICAL STORMS -

In the Atlantic -
Category one Hurricane Maria was located about 640 mi. (1030 km) SW of Cape Race, Newfoundland. A Hurricane Warning was issued for portions of Newfoundland. Coastal flooding is expected near and to the east of where the center makes landfall. Near the coast the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Tropical Storm Maria dumped 1 to 3 inches of rain on Bermuda before taking aim at Newfoundland Thursday.

In the Pacific -
-Tropical Storm 18w (Roke) was located approximately 120 nm east of Kadena AB, Japan.

-Tropical storm 19w (Sonca) was located approximately 630 nm east-southeast of Chichi Jima, Japan.
