Moderate earthquake jolts northwest Azerbaijan, injuring 15 - A moderate earthquake shook northwestern Azerbaijan on late Monday morning, injuring more than a dozen people and seriously damaging a number of houses. Shaking was also felt in neighboring Russia.
Indonesia - Heavy rain in Phuket over the last few days has resulted in many of Thalang’s earthquake-damaged homes facing water leaks as well. More than 400 homes in Bangkham Village, in the Sri Soonthorn sub-district, have cracks in them following the quake on April 16. Local residents say the quake-damaged houses are now very wet inside. "We want officials to help us fix our houses urgently – the rain is leaking through our houses." The damaged homes in Bangkham are urgent cases. Phuket authorities have approved payment of B1.3 million in compensation to 422 Sri Soonthorn households affected by the April quake. Each household will receive up to B20,000 to make repairs to their home.
VOLCANOES -
Indonesia - Three people have been killed and five are missing after floods carrying volcanic debris swept through a town in eastern Indonesia. "Following heavy rains during the night, volcanic floods hit early in the morning." Two people were also injured as the floodwaters rampaged in Ternate City in North Maluku province. Rescue workers were searching for five missing people. The floods carried volcanic mud from Mount Gamalama, which forms the island of Ternate in the Maluku chain. It erupted and spewed a column of ash 2000 metres into the air in December. Two rivers on the eastern side of the volcano overflowed after heavy rains, carrying volcanic debris down to three residential areas in the town. The Indonesian archipelago has dozens of active volcanoes. The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010.
Mexico City has started distributing 483,000 masks to residents who might need protection from the ash being spewed by the Popocatepetl volcano.
