New Zealand - Risk of White Island eruption increased - increasing gas emissions. GNS Science has issued a volcanic alert for White Island because of increased activity in the crater lake and numerous earthquakes. The recent changes in activity suggest that the hydrothermal system has become unstable and the risk of eruption has increased.

TROPICAL STORMS -
In the Atlantic -
- Tropical storm Florence was located about 600 mi. [960 km] W of the Cape Verde Islands. Florence should be near hurricane strength today.
- Tropical storm Ernesto was located about 285 mi [455 km] SW of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. On the forecast track, Ernesto will move south of Hispaniola Saturday night, move south of Jamaica this afternoon and move south of the Cayman Islands on Monday.

In the Western Pacific -
- Tropical storm 12w (Haikui) was located approximately 85 nm east- northeast of Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan.
- Tropical depression 13w was located approximately 360 nm northwest of Wake Island.

Tropical Storm Ernesto dumped heavy rain on islands at the eastern entrance to the Caribbean on Friday, crossing into the sea on a path that would skirt Jamaica and hit Mexico.

Tropical cyclone activity for the rest of the season in the Atlantic will be about 90% of the average, states the CSU Forecast Team, a slightly increased outlook that is still suppressed due to the likelihood of an El NiƱo event.

SEVERE RAIN STORMS, FLOODING, LANDSLIDES -

Floods in India may have killed up to 26 - The toll from flash floods in India stands at seven, but 19 are missing after torrential rains which triggered landslides near a hydro electric project.

EXTREME HEAT & DROUGHT / CLIMATE CHANGE -

Oklahoma - Firefighters are struggling to control more than a dozen blazes that have scorched thousands of acres. Wind-whipped Oklahoma wildfires destroyed homes and residents were evacuated in several counties.
Destructive Oklahoma wildfires rage as capital ties ALL-TIME HEAT RECORD - The high fire weather conditions were forecast to continue through the weekend. A state of emergency and statewide burn ban are in effect for the extreme weather conditions across Oklahoma.

SPACE WEATHER -

ERUPTING MAGNETIC FILAMENT - A filament of magnetism connecting sunspots AR1538 and AR1540 rose up and erupted on August 4th. As the filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, it propelled a massive CME into space: movie. The expanding cloud does not appear to be on a collision course with Earth, although a glancing blow might be possible 2 to 3 days hence. The sun is peppered with spots, but none poses a threat for strong solar flares.

HEALTH THREATS -

Officials urge hand washing amid swine flu concerns - Wash your hands. That's the message from the Wisconsin State Fair and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as public health officials monitor a new strain of swine flu.
CDC watching variant H3N2 as cases climb - The number of variant swine-origin H3N2 (H3N2v) influenza cases in the United States has reached 16 in the past 3 weeks and 29 in the past year, prompting health officials to watch the virus closely for any increase in its now-limited ability to spread from person to person.
