Parts of Washington and Oregon are in the midst of silent earthquakes this week. You can't feel this so-called "slow slip" quake and it doesn't cause damage. Still, scientists want to learn more about the recently discovered phenomenon.

Landslide kills China quake survivors - A series of quakes last month left 81 people dead and devastated parts of Yiliang county. On Thursday 18 children were confirmed dead in a landslide in the area. "The mountains around the school are covered with dense vegetation, and there were no signs of potential landslides during investigations after the earthquake." Thursday was a holiday in China, but the students who were killed had been attending school to make up for days missed after the quake. A 19th victim was buried in a house.

MYSTERY BOOMS -
Mystery Boom Rattles New Jersey Community - 10/4/12 - Police in Manchester Township are investigating a mysterious boom that shook block after block in the Ocean County community Thursday night. Residents say it felt and sounded like an explosion. “It was so loud that my windows were rattling".

In the Eastern Pacific -
- Tropical storm Olivia was located approximately 925 mi [1490 km] SW of the southern tip of Baja California.

In the Western Pacific -
Tropical storm Gaemi was located approximately 180 nm northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Will make landfall along the East Coast of Vietnam, then is forecast to dissipate due to the frictional effects of land.
